Cheer teams rely on trust and unity to make things work. However, squad unity doesn’t happen overnight. Follow these tips to build team unity on your cheer squad and create positive relationships among members.
Socialize Outside of Practice
Practice isn’t the only place where you can see your squad. Host a sleepover, plan a team dinner, or set up a pool party. Socializing outside of the stress of games and practice will allow your team to connect in new and refreshing ways.
Team members can rotate social activities and plan something fun for everyone. Plus, you’ll discover interesting things about your teammates. Maybe someone knows how to do a headstand or is a great singer. Socializing is the only way to find out these cool things.
Plan a Team Fundraiser
What’s better than promoting unity and raising money? Your squad should work together to reach a fundraising goal.
Don’t worry about boring and overused ideas like bake sales and car washes. There are tons of fun options. For instance, a cheerleading day camp is an awesome fundraising idea for your cheerleading squad.
Divide the squad into groups and assign different roles. For example, group one teaches participants popular fight songs, and group two teaches participants stunts.
Do a Community Service Activity
Team members bond over community service projects and shared passions. Local charities, nursing homes, animal rescues, soup kitchens, and nonprofits welcome cheerleaders and encourage them to volunteer. Work together to accomplish tasks and give back to your community.
Do a Question of the Day
Get to know your teammates better by asking a question of the day. You’ll spark a discussion on various topics and build friendships. Here are some fantastic questions:
- What three things are you grateful for?
- What is one talent/skill you would like to have?
- How do you deal with stress?
- What is your favorite movie?
- How do you like to express yourself?
- If you could trade places with someone, who would it be?
Have “Positive Circles” After Practice
Build team unity on your cheer squad with “positive circles” after practice. Ask each team member to share a goal or their favorite part about practice. Positive circles create a fun and optimistic environment for everyone. Team members can also give each other shoutouts for awesome performances. It’s all about boosting confidence and making everyone feel special.
